This site is dedicated to helping people who have significant trouble with fears, phobias, and anxiety. We offer free self help information you can use to foster your own recovery;  a workbook for people with panic attacks and phobias; professional treatment services in the Chicago area; a free e-mail newsletter on anxiety topics; telephone consultations with Dr. Carbonell for people who live in under-served areas; a listing of workshops and training for professional therapists who want to know more about treating anxiety; and more.

Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and reclaim your life.

You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name. I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life.

For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

  • the most common psychological complaints presented to therapists around the country. The 1999 study of mental health released by the Surgeon General estimated that more than 16% of the U.S. population suffers from an anxiety disorder;

  • and also the most treatable. Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health estimate that more than 90% of people with an anxiety disorder will make a good recovery, given appropriate treatment. Yet the same studies suggested that only 1 person in 4 will actually get "appropriate treatment".

What does "appropriate treatment" mean?  To me, it means treatment based on a cognitive behavioral approach, a treatment which helps you learn how to reclaim your life by treating the anxiety symptoms differently.  That's the kind of treatment we offer in our offices in Chicago, and in the self help materials available here.

I'm Dr. Dave Carbonell. I'm the Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center, a small group of psychologists who specialize in helping people overcome anxiety problems. We have offices in Chicago and several nearby suburbs. If you want to know more about us and the services we offer there, see "Get help in the Chicago area".
