Do you struggle with panic attacks, phobias, and anxiety? Do you suffer with agoraphobia, the fear of flying, the fear of public speaking, social anxiety disorder, or some other anxiety disorder? This site can help you find the solutions you need to regain your freedom from fear.

We offer free self help information;  a comprehensive workbook for people with panic attacks and phobias; professional treatment services in the Chicago area; training and consultation for professional therapists; a free e-mail newsletter ; telephone consultations with Dr. Carbonell; and more.

Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it disrupts their lives. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to tame this anxiety and reclaim your freedom.

Maybe you've suffered with panic, anxiety, and phobias a long time, and feel pessimistic about your prospects for recovery. Let me just mention that these problems are:

  • the most common problems presented to psychotherapists in the U.S. The 1999 study of mental health released by the Surgeon General estimated that more than 16% of the U.S. population suffers from an anxiety disorder;

  • and also the most treatable. Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health estimate that more than 90% of people with an anxiety disorder will make a good recovery, given appropriate treatment. Yet the same studies suggested that only 1 person in 4 will actually get "appropriate treatment".

What does "appropriate treatment" mean?  To me, it means cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is not a traditional psychotherapy, which hopes to help you feel better by reviewing your early childhood experiences and discovering "why" you feel anxious. CBT is a method which helps you learn, very specifically, how to handle your anxiety symptoms differently, so that you get more of the life you want. That's the kind of treatment we offer in our offices in Chicago, and in the self help materials available here.

I'm Dr. Dave Carbonell. I'm the Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center, a small group of psychologists who specialize in helping people overcome anxiety problems. We have offices in Chicago and several nearby suburbs. If you want to know more about us and the services we offer there, see "Get help in the Chicago area".
